Human backup drivers not required in such cars under proposed guidelines

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) released proposed regulations for testing and deployment of fully autonomous driving cars last week (10 March), according to Automotive News. The guidelines pave the way for testing of self-driving cars without a human backup driver by the end of this year. “These rules protect public safety, promote innovation and lay out the path for future testing and deployment of driverless technology,” said Brian Kelly, secretary, California Transportation Agency. The DMV is seeking public opinion on the proposed guidelines.
