Among various applications in a vehicle, forward lighting is a major one as it enables drivers to guide the vehicle safely during the night time along varying road geometries and to identify obstacles and pedestrians. Brake lights and dipped beam headlamps have been made available for cars since ages now but the technology witnessed development after 1960. In the last 20 years, lighting technology has evolved with the transition from halogen bulbs to high intensity gas discharge, to LEDs, and to laser technology. Much of this progress can be attributed to the pace of scientific innovation in materials technology.

The technology advancement has resulted in increase in number of ECUs in front lighting which includes headlamps and other front lighting functions. The demand has been majorly driven by adoption of LED across all vehicle segments as LED requires ECU to manage its function in various applications.
