Vehicle electrification is one of the most impactful and long-term trends in the automotive industry. For OEMs to comply with impending carbon dioxide legislation and regional emissions targets, alternative propulsion vehicles are entering OEM product portfolios.
The automotive industry is in transition away from the conventional powertrain, with a long-term aim to fully decarbonize the vehicle parc. IHS Markit's E-Mobility Service provides insight, context, data, and analytics for the transition to an electrified powertrain and associated infrastructure.
A low-emission zone (LEZ) is an area where access to certain polluting vehicles is regulated. LEZs primarily aim to control and improve the area's air quality, which means vehicles with higher-than-permissible emissions levels are usually banned. In some LEZs, these higher-polluting vehicles are allowed to enter after paying a fixed toll.
This report aims to understand the importance of LEZs, their implications, and their benefits, with a focus on regions that are implementing alternative-fuel technologies at a faster pace. It is an exhaustive report that covers information on the cities involved, the vehicles affected, and the types of restrictions in place. This report analyses LEZs in countries that are leading the electrification movement by discussing specific zones as case studies.
