Volvo's software hurdles: Is software the new Achilles' heel of legacy automakers?

Insights
AutotechInsight Analysis Monthly

The negative sentiment surrounding Volvo's software issues has the potential to dampen consumer enthusiasm for the company's future offerings and its reputation for reliability and safety. This situation serves as a reminder of the challenges traditional automakers face when rapidly transitioning to advanced software-defined vehicle (SDV) technologies.

In June, Volvo recalled the EX30 electric small sport utility vehicles (SUVs) owing to a software issue. The software update, intended to enhance features and functionality, instead led to a multitude of problems and a surge in customer returns and refund demands. This situation has resulted in a range of issues, including blacked-out infotainment screens, incorrect information displayed on functioning screens and driver profiles reverting back to factory settings. Furthermore, driver aids have been reported to malfunction, with the emergency braking system randomly activating, posing potential safety risks.
