Cloud computing use cases for automotive - raining innovation
Cloud services have become indispensable to most businesses including automotive, thanks to their many benefits—cost-efficiency, increased reliability, faster time to market, and better scalability. Cloud companies are now driving a cross-industry, partnership-based, data-led ecosystem that can revolutionize the automotive industry as value creation shifts from hardware to software and products to services.
Onboard data storage, management and processing capabilities in a connected vehicle are limited, driving automakers to look up to companies specialized in providing cloud services to aggregate and process this massive data load and derive real-time analytical (and preferably monetizable) insights. Connected-car use cases today typically rely on the cloud to process most of their workloads. For example, vehicle navigation systems can tolerate relatively high latency and may function better in the cloud. Over-the-air (OTA) software and firmware updates are typically delivered via a cloud data center and downloaded via Wi-Fi when it is least disruptive. Infotainment content originates in the cloud and is buffered onboard for a better user experience.
