The initiative aims to create and retain thousands of jobs across eight states, supporting the US transition to electric vehicles

The Biden administration plans to award $1.7 billion in grants to General Motors, Stellantis and others to convert existing plants to manufacture electric vehicles and components. The fund will be provided by the US Department of Energy under “Domestic Automotive Manufacturing Conversion Grants” to 11 “shuttered or at risk” plants in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland and Virginia. The grant aims to bolster the US auto industry's competitiveness, retain and create thousands of union jobs, and support communities with historical ties to automotive manufacturing.
