Mazda Motor Corp. and Panasonic Energy Co. Ltd. have signed a strategic agreement where Mazda will source cylindrical automotive lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries from Panasonic, the two companies said in a joint announcement on March 29.

The two companies had begun discussions aimed at building a medium-to-long term partnership for the supply of cylindrical automotive Li-ion batteries in June 2023. Those discussions have now resulted in the signing of this agreement, the two companies said.

According to the statement issued by the two companies in 2023, the discussions involved Panasonic Energy supplying Mazda with automotive cylindrical Li-ion batteries manufactured at Panasonic’s battery plants in Japan and North America.

Meanwhile, Mazda plans to install batteries procured from Panasonic Energy in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) scheduled to be launched in the latter half of the ongoing decade.
