INTERVIEW: Targeting intoxication before ignition: Magna unveils impaired driving prevention technology
Magna's integrated detection system takes the unique approach of proactively assessing driver impairment to operate the vehicle. Unlike ignition interlocks and other mechanisms targeting only active driving sessions, Magna’s multi-sensor platform aims to preemptively identify intoxication before individuals can put themselves and others at risk. By combining rapid camera and infrared analyses of driver physiology and exhalations, indications of elevated blood alcohol levels can be reliably detected when the driver enters the vehicle. Previous reactive systems often rely on analyzing vehicle movements, which enables action only after impaired operation has begun.
At Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, Magna introduced a breath- and camera-based predevelopment technology designed to prevent impaired driving. The solution represents a significant milestone in the evolution of driver and occupant monitoring systems. The new safety technology determines if drivers are "fit to drive" in a fast, reliable, and affordable way. The integrated solution combines key elements of the interior-sensing system, which utilizes camera technology to detect driver distraction, drowsiness, and intoxication through pupillary signals with infrared sensor technology developed by Senseair, a leader in air and gas sensing.
