Unlocking the potential of aluminum in BIW components in mainland China
The use of aluminum in automotive Body-in-White (BIW) construction offers advantages such as weight reduction, corrosion resistance, higher specific stiffness, formability, design flexibility, and reduced noise and vibration. This report considers how automakers in mainland China are redefining BIW structures with aluminum.
Aluminum is a crucial material in the production of automotive BIW. It is anticipated to grow in importance as automakers strive to create vehicles that are lightweight, safer, and more efficient. The increasing adoption of electrified vehicles is also expected to impact the demand for aluminum in BIW manufacturing. This report examines the evolving dynamics of aluminum in the automotive sector and the strategies employed by automakers in mainland China. All the analysis and research is based on S&P Global Mobility’s BIW forecast, which in turn is based on our Global Light Vehicle Production Forecast developed in 2024. The types of aluminum parts featured in the report include castings, extrusions, molded, roll formed, and stamped.
