The Global Forecast Database provides seven-year forward and historical forecast data broken out by technology, region/country, units, and revenue. Infotainment systems, wireless connectivity, various HFI connections, optical drive types and other IVI features are based on IHS Markit automotive sales.
Disclaimer: We're excited to inform you that sales-based headunit detail based on the vehicle nameplate level will be available in Q1 2020. This new offering will provide even more granularity on a regular update cadence than we've been able to offer in the past. As a result, the Infotainment Systems Forecast within the Connected Car Service will be discontinued beginning in 2020. Sales-based detail will flow through multiple reports at the technology level beginning next year. If you want access to brand- or model-level detail or have any questions, please contact brian.rhodes@ihsmarkit.com
OEM System Sales Forecasts by Region
The data looks at infotainment unit sales (in 1,000s) per region, meaning an in-vehicle OEM system was sold to an end consumer.
Infotainment systems are defined as:
- Audio System - Any system that features audio playback capabilities only; the unit may or may not feature an optical drive.
- Display Audio System – An audio only head unit with a large (>4”) central color display. These units often offer CE device integration for off-board connectivity.
- Navigation System - Any system that features on-board navigation functionality, including an embedded GPS receiver and an embedded navigation engine
OEM Revenues by System by Region
The data looks at system revenues (in the millions in USD) on a region by region basis. System revenue pertains to supplier revenue from the sale of systems (Tier 1 Suppliers selling to OEMs).
OEM Infotainment Systems, by Optical Drive Type, by Region
The data looks at infotainment unit sales (in the 1,000s) per region within two categories.
The Optical Drive category terms are defined as:
- Mechless - A system that features some form of CE device interface, but does not include any moving parts or optical drives
- CD – A system that includes a CD drive.
- DVD- A system that includes at least a DVD drive (can also include a CD drive).
The other category is infotainment systems which are defined as: see above.
OEM Infotainment Systems, by Optical Drive Type, by Region
The data looks at infotainment unit sales (in the 1,000s) with the mentioned features per region. These are features included on the system when purchased by the end consumer. It is possible for a single system to include more than one feature from this list.
- Auxiliary Interface - Includes a 3.5mm mini jack input for audio playback off a CE device via the system.
- Bluetooth- Includes a Bluetooth or Bluetooth high speed chipset. These are typically used for a range of services from hands free calling, through to tethering with a user’s CE device for connected services.
- Digital Terrestrial Radio - Includes digital radio functionality. Please note that broadcast standard may vary by region or country. IHS Markit data tracks all standards including but not limited to HD and DMB (DMB; DAB; DAB+).
- Hard Disk Drive (HDD) - Includes a hard drive. Please note this could be used for media storage; navigation maps; or both.
- Satellite Radio - Includes satellite radio functionality. At present only SiriusXM operates such a service as there is a very high entry cost due to the requirement to launch and maintain the transmission satellites.
- SD Card - Includes an SD card input for audio/video/navigation
- Solid State Drive (SSD) - Includes solid state memory for media / navigation map data storage.
- USB- Includes one or more USB inputs for the system.
- WiFi - Includes a WiFi chipset. This may either be used to create a WiFi hotspot in the vehicle attached to an embedded cellular communication module or to connect to a connected CE device such as a smart phone.
OEM Telematics Sales by Region
The data looks at Telematics systems sales (in the 1,000s) per region. This data looks at the number of light vehicles featuring a two way data connection provided by either an embedded TCU (combined or standalone) or bought in connection (smart phone / dongle / WiFi hotspot). The following definitions apply:
- Consumer Electronic (CE) Device Telematics - Systems that feature a two way data connection and connected services, leveraged from a consumer device such as a smart phone, USB dongle, or a WiFi hotspot.
- Embedded Telematics - Systems that feature an embedded telematics module. This can either be integrated into the System, or a standalone unit.
- Hybrid Telematics - Systems that feature both an embedded TCU, and allow the use of a connected CE device to provide a two way data connection to the car. Typically these systems will use the embedded TCU for emergency calling and the user’s device for infotainment functions.
Aftermarket System Sales Forecasts by Region
The following data looks at infotainment unit sales (in the 1,000s) per region. Aftermarket includes any system that is fitted at a dealership (please note this has particular impact in the Japanese market), and any system sold through typical retail channels. Please note that all system level definitions are the same for OEM or aftermarket systems, unless specifically highlighted in that section.
Aftermarket System Revenues by Region
