Rivian has filed a patent for wheel covers with active aerodynamics elements to further improve the efficiency of its electric vehicles (EVs). The patent, filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in August 2023 and published early this month (March 6), describes wheel covers featuring movable openings that can align with wheel spokes for increased airflow or create a smooth surface to reduce drag. This flexibility is achieved through a spring-actuated mechanism that allows the wheel cover to rotate between positions.
