Aiming to enhance EV safety, LG's new software boasts over 90% accuracy in detecting battery defects by leveraging AI and cloud technologies

LG Energy Solution (LGES) has announced its new venture into the battery safety diagnostics software business. This move is in response to the rising interest in electric vehicle safety and represents the company's expansion of its business portfolio beyond battery manufacturing to include battery management system (BMS) solutions.

LGES' safety diagnostics software, boasting an accuracy rate of over 90%, aims to enhance the safety and reliability of batteries used in EVs. The software is notable for its ability to detect battery defects and predict battery degradation using AI and cloud technologies, leveraging over 20 years of empirical battery data and BMS design expertise.

LGES has distinguished itself in the battery safety diagnosis sector through the development of this software, supported by a robust portfolio of over 8,000 BMS-related patents and analysis of more than 130,000 battery cells and 1,000 modules. This software provides comprehensive diagnostics on various potential battery defects and has been employed in over 100,000 EVs worldwide.

Distinguished from other diagnostics software that relies on virtual condition predictions, LGES' product preemptively identifies issues that could lead to potential problems, ensuring advanced safety measures for EV drivers. Furthermore, the company is expanding its collaboration with global automakers, citing its software's compatibility with EVs equipped with batteries from various manufacturers.

The diagnostics software not only guarantees high detection accuracy but also facilitates precise predictions of battery degradation. This is accomplished through continuous algorithm improvements via AI and cloud technology, allowing for real-time analysis of vast battery data, thereby maintaining an error rate in the 1% range for degradation prediction.

Additionally, LGES is developing BMS software optimized for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), aiming to capitalize on the future mobility era. This involves enhancing computational capabilities through the vehicle's system-on-chip (SoC) and implementing sophisticated battery algorithms. The company's efforts to bolster its BMS capabilities are further underscored by its collaborations with Qualcomm Technologies for advanced BMS diagnostic solutions and a memorandum of understanding with Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) for technology development and supply of high-performance battery management integrated circuits.
