Xpeng Motors, a mainland Chinese automaker known for integrating Lidar sensors into its battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), is transitioning to pure vision cameras for its upcoming model, the P7+, according to a report published by Electrek on July 10. This move, confirmed by the company following reports that circulated as early as February, positions Xpeng's new vehicle to potentially compete with Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology, despite the company's existing XNGP software already being a strong contender in the market. The P7+, revealed through social media posts by Xpeng Motors and its founder, He Xiaopeng, is described as embarking on a "mission to open a new era of intelligent driving."
The introduction of the P7+ follows the company's focus on the MONA M03 sedan, with He sharing insights on the new model's length of over 5 meters and its incorporation of advanced technology, including pure vision cameras. This development signifies Xpeng Motors' shift from Lidar to vision-based advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technology, showcasing the P7+'s design and hinting at enhanced cabin and cargo space due to its length, compared to the current Xpeng P7 sedan. Expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2024, the P7+ represents a significant step in Xpeng Motors' commitment to innovation in intelligent driving solutions.
