The new airbag system, meant to enhance protection in side collisions, uses two-stage deployment for optimal effectiveness

ZF LIFETEC has introduced pre-crash Dual Stage Side Airbag (Dual Stage SAB), designed to enhance occupant protection during side collisions, the company said in a press release on July 4. The advanced airbag system deployment occurs in two stages. The tech initiates the first stage approximately 200 milliseconds before an unavoidable crash to create space between the occupants and the expected impact point by pushing them a few centimeters into the vehicle interior. This preparatory action allows the second stage, the actual side airbag, to deploy with maximal effectiveness at the moment of collision, offering improved protection against serious injuries, particularly to the head and chest, which are common in side impacts due to the limited crumple zone.
