How illumination is being used in innovative ways such as animations, logos, and sensor concealment.

This insight is an edited article by Sascha Klapper, Research & Analysis Manager, S&P Global Mobility, first published in Driving Vision News on Feb. 6, 2024. The automotive lighting industry has evolved from simple lamps to dynamic LED, miniLED, microLED, and even lasers. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have influenced lighting design, with illumination used for fronts, animations, logos and sensor concealment. The competition from mainland Chinese original equipment manufacturers, growth of surface grill illumination and illuminated logos, and adaptive driving beam (ADB) headlamps are also noted. The emerging trend of near-field projection indicates a shift in vehicle lighting focus.
