Exploring the future trajectory of drum and disc brake adoption
Out of the 86 million light vehicles manufactured globally in 2023, automakers fitted 61 million with rear disc brakes and 23 million with rear drum brakes. S&P Global Mobility forecasts the strong demand for disc brakes will continue, driven by megatrends such as vehicle electrification and lightweighting.
The gradual trend toward higher vehicle speeds observed in recent decades has brought about the requirement for novel service brakes. These brakes must possess substantial potency to facilitate rapid deceleration within limited braking distances. Furthermore, they must maintain a compact form factor to seamlessly integrate within the spatial confines dictated by contemporary suspension and steering geometry configurations.
