Microoptics could be the next game changer in automotive lighting amid growing focus on miniaturization

In 2015, BMW presented its 7 Series sedan with Welcome Light Carpet, a new lighting innovation that illuminated the ground on both sides of the car, guiding driver (and passengers) to the doors of the car. The Welcome Light Carpet, developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, Germany used microoptics lenses in a honeycomb array to create a stripped pattern of light. The tiny projectors were mounted under the body sill below the front door.
