The majority of lidar-equipped vehicle models showcased by original equipment manufacturers offered Level 2 and Level 2+ features. Since the advent of over-the-air (OTA) updates, many OEMs are equipping their latest models with forward-looking hardware that includes sensors and computing power. These are then leveraged to roll out and upgrade features, and to create new revenue opportunities such as subscription models via OTA updates. A surge in lidar-equipped new electric vehicles (NEVs) in the region could be a part of such a strategy, although the lidar-equipped sensor suite and automated driving features might only be available for the highest trim levels.

The Shanghai Auto Show, one of the world’s most prestigious automotive events, has always been a hub for groundbreaking advancements and cutting-edge technologies. In a remarkable turn of events, the 2023 edition witnessed a surge in the number of vehicles equipped with lidar technology. From just one solitary model in 2021, a staggering 38 lidar-equipped vehicles graced the show floor in 2023, signifying a profound shift in the automotive industry.
