What does Argo AI’s departure mean for autonomous industry players?
Diversifying the focus to include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and Level 2 and Level 3 automated driving can help ensure a long-term future for suppliers, but revenue and profitability remain critical for automakers as economic conditions tighten.
The Volkswagen- and Ford-backed autonomous technology joint venture Argo AI is shutting down. Both automakers are shifting their strategies to autonomous cars. “In coordination with our shareholders, the decision has been made that Argo AI will not continue on its mission as a company,” Argo AI said in a statement. “Many of the employees will receive an opportunity to continue work on automated driving technology with either Ford or Volkswagen, while employment for others will unfortunately come to an end.”
