Ground-penetrating radar scans ground underneath it through sending VHF electromagnetic pulses to up to 10 feet to build up a picture of the subterranean world beneath it

WaveSense is working on commercializing of its ground-penetrating radar (GPR) that improves navigation safety in autonomous vehicles, reports VentureBeat. The US-based start-up is currently conducting several pilots of its patented technology, which scans ground underneath it through sending very high frequency (VHF) electromagnetic pulses to up to 10 feet to build up a picture of the subterranean world beneath it. As the self-driving vehicle moves along, it correlates that data to its onboard image database to determine the exact vehicle position in relation to the road.
