Engine production strategies of the major Japanese automakers
Automakers will expand usage of direct injection, two-stage turbocharging and hybrid technologies, while in transmissions they will continue their shift away from 4- and 5-speed automatics to 6-speed and higher and, in urban markets, to CVTs.
In fiscal 2011, Toyota produced an estimated eight million engines including more than 500,000 diesels at 15 plants in North America, Europe and Asia. Its line-up ranges from 660 cc (produced by Daihatsu Motor Co.) to 5.7L for North American trucks.
