The user experience is now the point for differentiation among automakers. As technology is democratized, the design and implementation of infotainment, safety, and comfort systems become paramount.

Designing the proper human-machine interface (HMI) platform and using cutting edge displays, speech recognition, and other interfaces will not only be the key to increased sales but also for future customer loyalty.

About this report

This report will focus on both a qualitative and quantitative assessment of various emerging HMI systems and technologies. The purpose of each section is to assess the market viability of a particular system or technology, establish a supplier and OEM landscape, and to forecast start of production and subsequent volumes through the forecast horizon.

The qualitative forecasting methods used to establish volume estimates will highlight  10 years (2020 to 2030) of automotive production to address the fact that some of these technologies may take a number of years before they either enter production or see increased adoption.

The “Emerging Display Technologies” section covers display technologies that in many cases already exist within the consumer electronics world, but may also have potential in automotive over this forecast horizon. Finally, the “Emerging HMI (non-display” section broadly speaking covers non-display areas of interest throughout the vehicle, from driver monitoring to cockpit domain controllers.

The systems and technologies in this report were selected based on a number of different factors, including an increased importance at conferences and trade shows, a potentially transformative feature that could impact existing established technologies, direct interest from automakers and suppliers for IHS Markit research, and trends outside the vehicle that are likely to spread into automotive.

Unlike many of the UI/UX offerings on AutoTechInsight, the contents of the Emerging HMI Technologies report may vary greatly with each report update. The topics covered may lose interest due to lack of viability in the vehicle, or could gain a high enough level of interest warranting a dedicated report within the UI/UX service (which was the case with dedicated display mirrors).
