The Car of the Future: Outlook for MEMS & Sensors - 2016

Publication Date: 30/12/2016

What will a car from 2025 look like, and what future does that hold for those in the MEMS and sensors supply chain?  Clearly, the trend will continue with green, safe and fun vehicles, as well as vehicles that eventually pilot themselves and run on batteries.   The self-driving car will heavily rely on sensors. But which kind? Will these new devices be mostly image and radar sensors, or are there new opportunities for MEMS LIDAR and high performance inertial MEMS that could support and enhance these systems? The safe car of the future will also need sensors.

Functional safety could create additional business for MEMS and magnetic sensor companies, for example, as sensors benefit from redundancy strategies. The electrified car will similarly rely on sensors as components change to meet the new electronic architectures. In this presentation IHS reviews the changes that can be expected in the next decade as a result of this changing automotive landscape and also identify opportunities and challenges that abound for those in the MEMS/sensors supply chain.
