Electrification, emission norms to drive demand for heat pumps

Technology Trends

As per the S&P Global Mobility forecast, Greater China will be the largest market for heat pumps during 2023–29, driven by electrification, but demand in the South Asian region, though relatively modest compared with other regions, will witness the highest growth rate.

In battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), range is of utmost importance and automakers are working continuously to improve it. However, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems used for cabin comfort features put a huge strain on range of BEVs. Unlike internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, BEVs do not have an engine to act as heat source that can help warm the cabin during winter months. To warm the cabins in BEVs during winter months/cold climatic conditions, a direct resistive heating device, such as positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heaters, is often used.
