Automated vehicle companies made rapid progress in the development, testing, and deployment of their technologies in 2020 despite facing unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic

As in the past few years, 2020 started with lot of buzz around automated driving technology with several companies, including automakers and suppliers, flocking to the annual CES 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada, US, to display their latest innovations ranging from hardware (such as cameras, radars, and lidars sensors) to software. However, the COVID-19 pandemic had by then begun to spread in Greater China as well as in its neighboring countries of South Korea, severely disrupting all activities in affected areas. In just a few weeks, the pandemic caught up with rest of the world including Europe and the Americas.
