Digital car key market set to become more competitive with Apple’s entry
Given iPhone’s popularity, Apple’s foray into the digital car key market will increase the pace of deployment of the technology in the automotive industry
At the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2020 in June, Apple announced that the latest update in its iOS operating system (OS), called iOS14, will support use of the iPhone as a digital car key, allowing drivers to unlock, start, and drive their compatible vehicles without using a physical key. To use the new feature, called Car Key, the users will have to pair their iPhone or Apple Watch with a car that supports the new digital key feature. Once paired, the user will need to tap their iPhone at the driver-side door handle to get inside and place the phone on the charging pad to start the car. In addition to the upcoming iOS14, the current iOS13 will also support Car Key application.
