Automotive lidar’s halftime walk

Technology Trends

While growth in automotive lidar has been driven by autonomous vehicles so far, there are growing interest for use of lidar sensor in ADAS applications

Lidar, which stands for light detection and ranging, is one of the most widely debated topics when it comes to autonomous driving. Do autonomous vehicles really need lidar for object detection or such vehicles can handle this key task without this expensive sensor, by relying on more affordable cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors? CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk’s criticism for application of lidar in vehicles is well known. Earlier this year, at an Autonomy Day event, Musk termed lidar as a “fool’s errand” and said anyone relying on lidar for autonomous driving is “doomed”.
