China 6 emission legislation

Policy & Regulation

Implementation to date and its effects

To address air pollution problems in China, the country’s regulatory bodies are working toward swiftly adopting more stringent protocols to reduce harmful automotive emissions and fuel consumption. In December 2016, the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment put forward the final version of its upgraded standard over China 5—the China 6 standard—for gasoline and diesel vehicles. The implementation of China 6 was segmented into two stages, 6-A and 6-B, in 2019 and 2023, respectively. OEMs and suppliers are expected to further upgrade their emission reduction and energy conservation technologies and align their research toward development of alternative-energy solutions that comply with tighter emission regulations.
