Government aims to have autonomous vehicles on its roads by 2020

The Japanese government is backing a three-dimensional (3D) mapping system developed by Mitsubishi Electric, The Associated Press reported on 14 June. The 3D map developed by the Japanese company includes various details, such as trees and pedestrians and claims to be off by no more than 25 centimeter (cm). “For autonomous driving, 3D high-precision maps will be very important, allowing cars to know their positions accurately and also know what the roads are like ahead,” said Yasuhide Shibata, senior general manager of Mitsubishi Electric.
