Renault plans to take a step-by-step approach to launch affordable EVs in India; emphasizes the need for strong supplier base for EV components in the country

This year’s Auto Expo in India had a completely different feel to it compared with the previous editions of the show for the sheer number of electric vehicles (EV) displayed. In all, over 50 EVs were showcased, which was unprecedented for the auto show. However, though automakers and suppliers look ready with their electrification technologies for the Indian market, they await concrete and supportive policies, including financial and other incentives, from the Indian government. French automaker Renault echoed similar sentiments saying government and other stakeholders can help create a strong ecosystem for the electric vehicle industry in the country. Eric Feunteun, Global Program Director, Electric Vehicles & Batteries, at Renault spoke to Dhruva Gogoi and Srikant Jayanthan of IHS Markit’s SupplierInsight about Renault’s plans for the Indian market. Eric revealed that Renault would take a step-by-step approach to launch affordable EVs in India and emphasized that there’s a need to create strong supplier base for EV components in the country to begin local production of EVs.
