3D printing leading to lighter automotive parts

Additive manufacturing is the process of creating three-dimensional objects by depositing/printing layer by layer using a software-controlled printer. The process is also known as 3D printing in Industry circles, and is touted as one of the most innovative manufacturing processes. It can manufacture objects of almost any shape provided the design data can be fed into the required computer data file. In addition, the materials that can be used for manufacturing can vary, from plastics and composites to metals.
