Startup firms cash in as tier-1s make inroads into cyber security

Technology Trends

Automotive cyber security is still an emerging field, and many suppliers are trying to sell unique solutions and approaches. While there seems to be leaders developing among the Tier 1s, there is still plenty of opportunity in this high growth market.

Automakers are in a full fledge race to implement cyber security solutions after a fairly slow start in 2015 and 2016. This urge is primarily driven by: the impending launch of commercially viable autonomous cars; the increase in cyber-physical systems, like x-by wire controls; the predicted near ubiquity of connectivity in cars; legislation; and growing software complexity. It is also driven by proven vulnerabilities through hacking. Most major automakers – including General Motors (GM), Volkswagen (VW),Ford, Tesla, and Toyota – have been hacked.
