Alpina is celebrating its 50th anniversary over 2015. Known around the world for producing high-performance versions of existing BMW models at the facility in Buchloe, Germany, the company remains under the ownership of the Bovensiepen family. In this interview, Florian Bovensiepen, head of Purchasing, talks about the company relationship with BMW and various Alpina sourcing strategies

The X3 is produced in the United States, in Spartanburg, and the plant is not as flexible as the BMW plants here in Bavaria. It’s not so easy to set up production cooperation with the Americans. [In Germany] the plants have flexible production processes that allow the incorporation of different vehicle types, but it’s not the same in America. This means that the work we do on the XD3 is more than on other cars. We have a production mix and the XD3 has to fit into that. The total output for the model is 160 units each year. They are quite work-intensive, between 23 and 25 hours, whereas a B3 (based on the 3-Series saloon) would be about one-third of that. Everything Alpina-specific for the XD3 is completed here.
