Inside story on the Nissan X-Trail
The Nissan X-Trail is a popular sport utility vehicle (SUV) that balances functionality and comfort. We delve into its interior design, infotainment system, connectivity features, luggage capacity, cabin versatility, and interview Alex Edmond, Qashqai & X-Trail product section manager at Nissan Motor (GB) Limited.
Interior design and comfort
The interior layout is straightforward, with controls positioned for easy access. While the materials used throughout the cabin are generally of good quality, some areas use scratchy plastics, particularly in lower trims. This may detract from the overall premium feel that some buyers expect in this segment.
There are five trim levels available on the X Trail: Visia, Acenta Premium, N-Connecta, Tekna and Tekna+. In higher trims, such as the Tekna+, the interior receives a noticeable upgrade. These models feature enhanced materials, including leather upholstery and chrome accents, which elevate the aesthetic appeal. The panoramic sunroof available in these trims adds to the spacious feel of the cabin.
The seating arrangement is designed to accommodate five passengers comfortably, with ample headroom and legroom. The front seats are well-cushioned, providing good support for longer journeys. However, the rear seats may feel a bit cramped for taller passengers, especially during extended trips.
Infotainment system
The infotainment system is user-friendly, catering to a range of tech-savvy consumers. Higher trims are equipped with a 12.3-inch digital cluster and an upgraded infotainment screen that offers sharp graphics and quick responsiveness. The interface is intuitive, allowing users to navigate through menus with ease.
However, base models come with an older 7.0-inch thin-film-transistor (TFT) display, which may not meet the expectations of modern users. The difference between the infotainment systems in higher and lower trims can be significant, potentially influencing purchasing decisions.
The system supports various media formats and includes features such as Bluetooth connectivity, allowing for hands-free calls and audio streaming. While the sound quality is generally acceptable, those seeking a premium audio experience may want to consider upgrading to the Bose stereo system, which is available in higher trims.
Connectivity features
Connectivity is a key selling point for the X-Trail, especially in higher trims. The vehicle is equipped with multiple USB ports, including both USB-A and USB-C options, ensuring that all passengers can keep their devices charged during trips.
The X-Trail supports wireless Apple CarPlay, providing seamless integration for iPhone users. However, Android Auto remains a wired option, which may be a limitation for Android users who prefer a fully wireless experience.
In addition to smartphone integration, the SUV includes a range of other connectivity options, such as Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities in higher trims. This feature can be an advantage for those who require internet access while on the go, making the vehicle suitable for both work and leisure purposes.
Luggage capacity
Luggage capacity is an essential factor for many SUV buyers. In five-seat mode, the vehicle provides 585 liters (20.6 cubic feet) of trunk space, which is sufficient for most everyday needs, such as grocery shopping or family outings. When the rear seats are folded down, the capacity expands to an impressive 1,298 liters (45.8 cubic feet), allowing for larger items or more extensive luggage when needed. For buyers opting for the seven-seat configuration, the trunk space decreases to 485 liters (17.1 cubic feet).
The trunk area features a flat loading floor that makes it easy to load and unload items. There are various storage compartments within the trunk, allowing for the organization of smaller items.
Cabin versatility and practicality
The rear seats are designed with a 60:40 split, enabling users to configure the seating arrangement according to their needs. The central backrest can also fold down, revealing cup holders and a passthrough for longer items.
Storage solutions include several compartments for stowing personal items, such as sunglasses, phones and small bags. The door pockets are spacious enough to hold large water bottles.
