Sony and Honda partner to launch AI-enhanced autonomous EV

21-Oct-2024

Sony Group and Honda Motor have announced a collaborative effort to enhance the self-driving capabilities of their electric vehicles through the use of AI, according to a report published by Nikkei Asia on Oct. 20. The partnership will materialize in their upcoming luxury EV model, the Afeela, which is expected to launch in Japan and the US in 2026. The joint venture, known as Sony Honda Mobility, intends to incorporate advanced AI technology to augment safety, efficiency and the overall driving experience offered by their EVs.

The Afeela model will be equipped with more than 45 sensors and will utilize Qualcomm's Digital Chassis platform, providing Level 3 automated driving capabilities. This level signifies that the vehicle can undertake the majority of driving tasks, though it requires the driver to stay alert and be ready to intervene if necessary. Beyond its capabilities as a vehicle, the Afeela is designed to serve as a moving entertainment space, featuring augmented reality (AR) driving assistance graphics based on Unreal Engine technology, and a variety of interfaces for movies, games and infotainment. Its design, which includes a panoramic sunroof and a media bar that interacts with the driver and surroundings, is described as being reminiscent of a spaceship.

The launch plan for the Afeela includes the commencement of preorders in the first half of 2025, with deliveries set to begin in spring 2026 in North America, followed by releases in Japan. This venture between Sony Group and Honda Motor signals a significant step toward the integration of AI and automotive technologies, setting a promising trajectory for the future of mobility.
